ABOUT
Europe Day is the day of celebrating peace and unity in Europe and is held every year on 9th of May. This date marks the anniversary of the historic “Schuman declaration” in 1950, when at a speech in Paris Robert Schuman, the foreign minister of France at the time, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body, was only signed a year later. Shuman's proposal, along with his vision to terminate Europe's conflicts and the wars that came along with them, is considered to be the beginning of the idea of the European Union. Each year thousands of people take part in visits, debates, school talks, concerts and other events to mark the day and raise awareness about the EU.
This year (2021) Greece is celebrating 200 years from the revolution against the Ottoman Empire which led to the creation of the modern Greek state, but also 40 years since its accession to the EU.
What are we doing?
On the occasion of Europe Day and under the umbrella of the Conference On The Future of Europe, we are organising an informative, engaging and fun one-day event, aiming to inspire young people to gain an interest in the EU and its activities. Europe Day at the Moraitis School is our initiation of bringing the notion and mentality of the European Union closer, first and foremost to our fellow students and to any other who maybe interested.
In parallel, this event shall be a source of inspiration for all young people, of the change for the better we want to see in Europe. Such examples could be the successful implementation of the Green Deal, and the increase of respect each European citizen holds towards the environment. The further advancement in digitalization, the strengthening of the Erasmus+ program as well as a larger involvement of the youth in EU activities are also very crucial. We hope to promote these ideas through discussions of integral current topics, as well as opinions of highly-respected about how key issues in Europe today can be overcome.
